Check out www.nanowrimo.org for more details about this crazy adventure I go on every November.
Short version:
NaNoWriMo (or NaNo for short) participants write 50,000 words in the form of a novel in just the 30 days of November.
Why 50k? Because that's the textbook definition of a "Novel". Anything less is a Novella or a Short Story.
Why 30 days? Because we're insane. Every Last One Of Us. Have you tried to write a story without a deadline? Doesn't work very well does it? The time line outright forces you to write anything that comes to mind and get it down. Editing is strongly discouraged. That's what December is for.
What about? Anything. I know people who write Children's Stories, Autobiographies, Sci-Fi, Fan Fiction, and even torrid romance stories fit for Fabio.
** I'm amused that Spell check lit up the word Children's but NOT the word Fabio. WTF?**
Where? This is a global movement that's been growing for over a decade. They're based in Berkley Ca, near San Francisco, but they're all over the US and in the Netherlands, Spain, and Germany. The regional forums will help you find a group doing it local to you.
How much? FREE! You can do this totally free but you'll feel better if you donate. Every penny counts but just 10$ gives you recognition on the site with your halo. Why donate?: They help improve literacy and creativity amongst young students and encourage them to write their stories. What could be better!?
